Bengt Norman Bengtson

Bengt Norman Bengtson was born in Chicago, Illinois, on February 4, 1900, son of Bengt Jon and Ebba Martina (Hullander) Bengtson, both now deceased. He attended the University of Illinois and the Medical School of that University, and holds the degree of Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Medicine. Commissioned Lieutenant Commander in the Medical Corps of the Naval Reserve on June 12, 1942, he was promoted to Commander with date of rank July 10 1945, and to Captain to date from July 1, 1955.

Reporting for active duty on June 17, 1942, he served throughout the World War II period at the US Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois, as Senior Medical Officer and Penologist at the US Navy Disciplinary Barracks and Training Center Bridge, with collateral duty at San Quentin, Alcatras and various State and Federal prisons. He was detached in January 1946, released to inactive states in the Naval Reserve, and returned to his profession as physician and surgeon in Chicago.

He was recalled to active duty in January 1951, for the purpose of observing State and Federal Prisons, studying and compiling data on penologist methods of modern prison practices for use by the Department of the Navy. When detached in October 1953, he returned to inactive status, and since that time has served as Senior Medical Officer, 1st Weapons Battalion USN&MTC, Forest Park, Illinois. He has had periods of training duty as follows: Assistant Medical Officer of USS Duell (APA-160), August 1 to 15, 1954; Assistant Medical Officer of USS Leyte (CVS-32), September 11 to 25, 1955; Medical Officer of USS General G. M. Randall (T-AP-115), June 23 to July 15, 1956; as an Observer on board USNS Rose (T-AP-126) a Military Transportation Service ship, August 5 to September 8, 1957; and as a member of the Naval Reserve Policy Board, US Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, January 12 to 27, 1958.

Captain Bengtson has the American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

He died December 26, 1985.
