PDF Version [150KB]

Edward Charles Elliott was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 15, 1918, son of Charles E. and Katherine M. (Flannigan) Elliott. He graduated from Chicago Teachers College of DePaul University, with the degree of Bachelor of Education. In July 1942 he enlisted in the US Naval Reserve and was assigned to the Naval Air Technical Training Center, Chicago, where he served as Aviation Storekeeper. In February 1944 he was appointed a Midshipman and after attending the Naval Reserve Midshipman School at Notre Dame University, was commissioned Ensign, US Naval Reserve, May 31, 1944. He subsequently advanced in rank to that of Lieutenant Commander, to date from March 1, 1958, having transferred to the Regular Navy in June 1952.

He was a student at the Recognition School, Ohio State University, during July and August 1944, then joined USS Meriwether as Second Division Officer. As such he was responsible for eighteen of twenty-six boats assigned to that attack transport. While attached to the Meriwether he participated in the initial landings on Okinawa on Easter morning (April 1, 1944) and at Tokyo Bay. Detached from that vessel in December 1945, he returned to the United States and was relieved of all active duty. Between that time and October 1950 he was a member of the Reserve Unit in the Ninth Naval District.

Ordered to return to active Naval service, he reported in November 1950 for instruction at the Combat Information Center School, Boston, Massachusetts, and in January 1951 became Communications Officer on board USS President Jackson. That attack transport made several trips to Korea and Japan and made the last "official" trip to Pago Pago, Samoa, to move dependents of the Fita Fita guard to the Hawaiian Islands. In October 1952 he joined the Staff of Commander Service Force, US Pacific Fleet as Assistant Force Communication Officer and two years later was assigned as Executive Officer of USS Merapi, home ported at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The Merapi participated in "passage to freedom" operations in French Indo-China.

After instruction at the Destroyer Force, Atlantic Gunnery School, June-August 1956, he reported as Gunnery Officer on board USS Noa and in April 1958 became Aide and Flag Secretary to the Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force, headquartered at Norfolk, Virginia. During September and October 1960 he was a student at the Fleet Sonar School, Key West, Florida, after which he served as Executive Officer of USS Damato. That destroyer escort participated in the chase of "pirates" on board the SS Santa Maria in January 1961. Detached from the Damato in December 1961, he is now Commanding Officer of USS Hoist (ARS-40).

Lieutenant Commander Elliott has the American Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one star; World War II Victory Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Korean Service Medal with one star; and the United Nations Service Medal.

He died May 4, 1986.
