Robert James Everett

Robert James Everett was born in Kingston, New York, on June 1, 1918, son of Charles Raymond and Mildred (Van Wert) Everett. He graduated from Kingston High School and in 1940 received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. Thereafter he attended Law School of that University for two years. While in college, he participated in athletics, including intra-mural wrestling, tennis and swimming and was Editor of Duke University Law Review. Commissioned Ensign in that Supply Corps of the US Naval Reserve on June 16, 1941, he subsequently advanced in rank to that of Captain, to date from July 1, 1960, having transferred to the Supply Corps of the US Navy in February 1943.

Reporting for active naval service in June 1941, he had instruction at the Navy Supply Corps School, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, until September of that year, when he was assigned as Assistant to the Supply Officer at the Marine Corps Air Station, Quantico, Virginia. He remained there until November 1942, after which he was Supply and Disbursing Officer at the Naval Aviation Cadet Selection Board, Kansas City, Missouri.

During May and June 1943 he was a student at the Aviation Supply Officers School, Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida, after which he served as Assistant Supply Officer at the Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, Texas.  In November 1943 he joined USS Nehenta Bay and subsequently participated in five major campaigns from the Marshall-Gilberts to the Campaign for Okinawa. He received a Letter of Commendation, with authorization to wear the Commendation Ribbon and Combat “V,” from the Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet, commending him for “meritorious performance of duty…during the period January 3 to December 27, 1944…”

Returning to the United States in July 1945, he report as Assistant Supply Officer at the Naval Air Station, San Diego, California. From September 1947 until June 1949 he attended the Graduate School of Business Administration at Stanford University, from which he received the degree of Master of Business Administration. He was next Publications Division Officer in the Bureau of Supplies and Accounts, Navy Department, Washington, DC, and in September1951 became Assistant Naval Attaché and Assistant naval Attaché for Air at the American Embassy, Paris, France.

In August 1953 he became Operations Officer at the Naval Supply Depot, Bayonne, New Jersey and from June 1955 until June 1958 served as Director of the Stock Control Division at the Ships parts Control Center, Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Continuing duty ashore, he was Deputy Comptroller in the Bureau of Supplies and Accounts, Navy Department until July 1961 and, after instruction at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Washington, DC, reported in July 1962, as Force Supply Officer on the staff of Commander Submarine Force, Pacific Fleet. In August 1964 he assumed duty as Executive Officer of the Naval Supply Center, Norfolk, Virginia.

In addition to the Commendation Ribbon with “V” Captain Everett has the American Defense Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one silver star (five engagement); World War II Victory Medal; National Defense Service Medal; and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one star.

He died December 23, 2007.
