Mark A. Young

Rear Admiral Mark A. Young became Deputy Director, Defense Finance and Accounting Service on 29 August 2001. As Deputy Director, Rear Adm. Young served as the individual military services’ and defense agencies’ primary advocate to ensure DFAS provides timely and professional financial services to our fighting forces. 

A native of Rochester, New York, Rear Adm. Yong began his career in 1973 as damage control assistant on USS Koelsch (FF 1049), homeported in Mayport, Florida. In 1975, he transferred to the Supply Corps and attended the Navy Supply Corps School I Athens, Georgia. He then served as supply officer aboard USS Paul Revere (LPA 248), in Long Beach, California. 

Rear Adm. Young served as the administrative aide to the Vice Commander, Naval Supply Systems Command from 1978 to 1980 and as the planning officer, Naval Supply Depot, Subic Bay, Philippines. After assignments at the Naval Aviation Supply Office, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and on the staff of the Commander, Naval Air Force, US Atlantic Fleet, in Norfolk, Virginia, he returned to sea in 1991 as the supply officer, USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). 

Following sea duty, he reported to the Naval Supply Systems Command as the head of the Officer Plans Division in the Office of Supply Corps Personnel, and assumed the position of Director of Supply Corps Personnel in June 1994. One year later, he moved to become the head of the Spares Program and Policy Branch on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. 

In 1996, Rear Adm. Young assumed command of the Fleet and Industrial Supply officer, Rear Adm. Young served as the Commander, Defense Supply Center, Richmond, Virginia from 1999-2001. 

A 1973 graduate of the US Naval Academy, Rear Adm. Young earned an MBA from Stanford University in 1982 and attended the Executive Program at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business Administration in 1997. 

Rear Adm. Young’s decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit (3 awards), the Meritorious Service Medal (4 awards), the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, and the Naval Aviation Supply Officer Wings.
