John Berthold Berude was born in Colon, Panama, on March 4, 1922, son of Arthur G. and Florence C. (Berthold) Berude. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Cambridge in 1943, and on October 10, 1944 enlisted as an Apprentice Seaman in the US Naval Reserve. After training at the Naval Training Center, San Diego, California, he was commissioned Ensign, USNR, on November 10, 1944. He subsequently advanced in rank to that of Rear Admiral, to date from September 1, 1973, having transferred from the Naval Reserve to the US Navy on May 9, 1947.

Following his commissioning in 1944, he had duty in connection with ship repair at the Puget Sound (Washington) Naval Shipyard unil November 1948, where he joined USS Springfield (CL-66), which deployed to the Western Pacific. In February 1950 he transferred to USS Manchester (CL-83) and while on board that cruiser participated in operations in the Korean area of hostilities.

During the period June 1950 to June 1954 he was a student in naval construction and engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Cambridge. Following two months’ training at the Diving and Salvage School, Bayonne, New Jersey, he was engaged in ship maintenance on the Staff of the Commander Amphibious Force, US Pacific Fleet. In that assignment, he participated in the Arctic Dew Line Expedition in 1957.

Assigned in September 1957 to the Bureau of Ships, Navy Department, Washington, DC, he had duty, in addition to the LVT Type Desk, in connection with Amphibious, Boat, Maintenance, and New Construction. From August 1960 to July 1964 he served as Ship Repair Officer in the Office of the Assistant Industrial Manager, Seattle, Washington. He next transferred to the Long Beach (California) Naval Shipyard, where he served as Design and Repair Superintendent and Planning Officer. He remained there until April 1969, when he joined the Staff of Commander Service Group THREE Commander Task Force SEVENTY-THREE. “For meritorious service…” in that capacity, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. The citation further states in part:

“…Deeply concerned with the many problems experienced by fleet units operating under arduous conditions, he constantly sought new methods and means of improving support to these units with every available resource…”

In September 1970 he assumed command of the Naval Shipyard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with additional duty as Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair in the Fourth Naval District and on the Staff of the Commandant of that district. In July 1973 he was assigned temporary duty at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, California, prior to reporting in November of that year as Commander of the Naval Shipyard, Charleston, South Carolina.

In addition to the Bronze Star Medal, Rear Admiral Berude has the American Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal; China Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal with bronze star; Korean Service Medal with five stars; United Nations Service Medal; and the Vietnam Service Medal with one silver star. He also has the Navy Distinguished Service Order Second Class by the Republic of Vietnam and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device.

He died February 17, 2015.
