Paul Raymond Engle

Paul Raymond Engle was born in Petoskey, Michigan, on January 31, 1916, son of Mrs. Ralph D. (Grace Gail Disbrow) Engle and the late Dr. Engle. He attended public schools in Petoskey, was graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Albion College, Albion, Michigan in 1936, and received the degree of Doctor of Medicine from the School of Medicine, University of Michigan, at Ann Arbor, in1940. He completed his internship at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, the next year. Since that time, he continued his education with that following graduate courses: Internal Medicine, George Washington University, 1947; Internal Medicine, Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Maryland, 1947; Tropical Medicine, Tulane University, 1947-1956. Commissioned Lieutenant (junior grade) in the medical Crops of the US Navy on October 20,1941, he advanced in rank to that of Captain, to date from October1, 1955.

Reporting for active duty on November 18,1941, he completed the Indoctrination Course for Medical Officers at the Naval Medical School, Washington, DC, in January 1942, and was assigned briefly to the US Navy Mobile Hospital #3. In March 1932 he joined USS Detroit (CL-8) and remained at sea as Assistant Medical Officer of that cruiser until February 1944. During that period, he participated in operations in the Aleutians, Including the operation of Attu in May and June 1943.

Returning to the United States in February 1944, he served as Assistant Medical Officer at the Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida, for three months, and in July 1944 reported for brief  duty as Staff Medical Officer at Command Detachment, Sixth District Headquarters, Charleston, South Carolina, In September of  year  he began a tour of duty in the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Navy Department, Washington, DC, where he headed the Ship’s Facilities Section, Planning Division.

He has instruction in Internal Medicine at the US Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Maryland, and while there, April to November 1947, also served as Ward Medical Officer. In December 1947 he became Chief of Medicine at the US Naval Hospital, Guam, Mariana Islands, and in August 1949 was detached to return to the United States. He next had instruction in Tropical Medicine at Tulane University, New Orleans, and in addition had duty as Assistant in the Department of Tropical Medicine and Public Health. From October 1950 until February 1951 he was Assistant Chief of Medicine and Acting Chief of Medicine at the Naval Hospital, Corpus Christi, Texas.

In March 1951 he reported as Duty Director of the Physical Qualifications and Medical Records Division, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Navy Department, Washington, DC, where he remained until August 1955. He was next a student at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Washington, DC and in July 1956 joined the Staff of Commander Service Force, Pacific Fleet as Force Medical Officer. In September 1959 he returned to the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, where he served as Director of the Physical Qualifications and Medical records Division until ordered detached in September 1965 for duty as Commanding Officer at the Naval Hospital in USS Repose (AH-16).

Captain Engle has the American Defense Service Medal; Asiatic- Pacific Campaign Medal with on engagement star; American Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; and the National Defense Service Medal.

Doctor Engle is a member of Sigma Nu, Albion College, Phi Chi Medical Fraternity, University of Michigan. He is a member of the American Medical Association, and a Fellow of the Royal Society, Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. He served as Vice President and Medical Director of the Navy Mutual Aid Association.

He died August 6, 2002.
