John Henry Ebersole

John Henry Ebersole was born in Sterling, Illinois, on January 26, 1925, son of Noah H. and Geraldine (McCormick) Ebersole. He attended St.  Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, and Indiana University Medical School, Indianapolis, Indiana, and holds the degrees of Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine. Since entering the Naval Service he has attended Deep Sea Diving School, Medical Submarine School, and has completed a course in Radiation Medicine at Duke University. He has the designation of Submarine Medical Officer.

Commissioned Lieutenant (junior grade) in the Medical Corps of the US Naval Reserve on June 18, 1948, he had been a student member since January 1943. Through subsequent advancement and his transfer to the Medical Corps of the US Navy, he attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander, to date from July 1, 1955.

After graduation from Indiana University Medical School in 1948, he completed internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Indianapolis, in July 1949 and reported to the Naval Gun Factory, Washington, DC, where he served briefly as Dispensary Medical Officer. He was a student Medical Officer at the Deep Sea Diving School from October of that year until January 1950 then had instruction at the US Naval Submarine School, New London, Connecticut. Six months later he was assigned as Medical Officer at the Medical Research Laboratory, New London, and from October 1951 until March 1952 had instruction in Nuclear Medicine at Duke University, continuing instruction until June of that year at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Returning to the Medical Research Laboratory, New London, in June 1952, he remained there as Medical Officer of six months, then transferred to the National Reactor Testing Station, Arco, Idaho, where as Medical Officer he participated in operations in connection with nuclear submarine propulsion. In February 1954 he was assigned to the Office of the Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Groton, Connecticut, for duty as Prospective Medical Officer of USS Nautilus (SSN-571), and at her commissioning, September 30, that year, was on board as Medical Officer, serving in that capacity until February 1956.

He assisted in fitting out USS Seawolf (SSN-575), and since her commissioning on March 30, 1957, has served as Medical Officer of that nuclear powered submarine.

Lieutenant Commander Ebersole has the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Naval Reserve Medal.

He is a member of the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity, and is a qualified Submarine Medical Officer (as of January 1953).

He died on September 23, 1993.
