Leslie David Ekvall

Leslie David Ekvall was born in Marshfield, Wisconsin, on May 2, 1902, son of Charles and Cecelia Anderson Ekvall. He attended High School in La Grange, Illinois, and received the degree of Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine from Broadview College in La Grange, and the College of Medical Evangelists, Los Angeles, California, respectively. After graduation from Medical School he was commissioned Lieutenant (jg) in the Medical Corps of the United States Navy, to date from June 29, 1931, and subsequently advanced to the rank of Captain, with date of rank March 25, 1945.

From 1931 to 1933 he was attached to the US Naval Hospital, San Diego, California, assigned to surgery and neurology. He had two years duty as District Medical Officer of the Fresno District, Civilian Conservation Corps, and in 1935-1936 served in the Outpatient Department of the US Navy Hospital, Mare Island, California. Ordered to China Station, he served as Medical Officer of USS Panay, operating on Yangtze Patrol for a year, and remained there a second year attached to the Outpatient Department of the Fourth Marine Hospital at Shanghai.

In 1938-1940, after his return to the United States, he again served at the Naval Hospital, San Diego (Outpatient Department), and during the two years to follow was in charge of the Family Hospital, US Naval Submarine Base, Coco Solo, Canal Zone. During the early period of World War II he was transferred to the Naval Training Station, Bainbridge, Maryland, where he served as Executive Officer of the Training Station and Outpatient Department. Early in 1944 he reported to Fleet Air Wing SEVEN, Dunskwell, England, and remained there throughout the period of hostilities as Medical Officer in Charge, G-4 Component.

After the war he served as Executive Officer of the Naval Training Center, San Diego, and on October 28, 1946, reported to the District Medical Office, Thirteenth Naval District, Seattle, Washington. There he served until June 25, 1949 as Assistant District Medical Officer in Charge of the Outpatient Department, Dispensary, US Naval Station, Seattle.

On June 17, 1949, he was ordered to the Naval Station, Tongue Point, Astoria, Oregon, as Service Medical Officer. On May 26, 1953 he was transferred to the Naval Dispensary, San Francisco, California, and in December of the same year was ordered to the Naval Construction Battalion Center, Port Hueneme, California. Under Orders of April 10, 1956, he currently serves as District Medical Officer for the Tenth Naval District, Headquarters as San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Captain Ekvall has the Navy and Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal; the China Service Medal; American Defense Service Medal, with star; American Campaign Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; and the National Defense Service Medal.

Dr. Ekvall is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and a member of the American Medical Association.

He died June 11, 1970.
