Royal Casper Carrington was born in Parsons, Tennessee, on September 10, 1916, son of Cecil Roney and Virgie (Hay) Carrington. He attended Union University, Jackson, Tennessee, and taught in the public schools of Decatur County, Tennessee, for five years before entering the Naval Service on October 28, 1940, as a Naval Cadet, USNR. Designated Naval Aviator on December 12, 1940, he was commissioned Ensign in the US Naval Reserve, and subsequently transferring to the US Navy (January 13, 1943), he attained the rank of Commander, to date from January 1, 1951.

Completing his flight training in December 1940, he served from January 1941 to February 1943 with Scouting Squadron 42, on Atlantic anti-submarine patrol, operating first from the USS Ranger, later from USS Yorktown. He next served in Composite Squadron 36 on similar duty based on the USS Mission Bay, and later operating from USS Core. In July 1944 he was transferred to Carrier Aircraft Service Unit 26 in which he served until the end of hostilities.

Six months’ duty on the staff of Commander Carrier Division One preceded duty in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Navy Department, Washington, DC, from February 1946 to June 1948. He then reported to the General Line School, Newport, Rhode Island, and completing the course there in June 1949, joined USS FD Roosevelt (CVB 42). He remained on duty as Air Operations Officer of that carrier until December 1950, when he returned to the Navy Department, for duty in the Bureau of Aeronautics. He is now Head of the Engine Program Section of that Bureau.

Commander Carrington has the American Defense Service Medal; the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal; the American Campaign Medal; and the World War II Victory Medal.

He died July 10, 2004.
