Carl Ashton Veline

13 November 1912 – 5 June 1995

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Carl Ashton Veline received his dental training at the University of Minnesota Dental School, from which he received the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1936. In August 1938 he entered the US Navy as a Lieutenant (junior grade) in the Dental Corps and had indoctrination at the Naval Dental School, Washington, DC.

During the period 1938 to 1940 he had consecutive duty as Assistant Dental Officer at the Naval Operating Base, Norfolk, Virginia and as Dental Officer at the US Naval Hospital, Charleston, South Carolina. He was serving as Dental Officer on board the cruiser Cincinnati when the United States entered World War II and subsequently was assigned as Assistant Dental Officer at the Naval Air Station, Norfolk, Virginia (1942-1944) and as Senior Dental Officer with the NINTH Marine Air Wing, Fleet Marine Force (1944-1946).

In the spring of 1946 he joined the destroyer tender Yosemite as Senior Dental Officer and in June of the next year became Chief of Dental Service at the US Naval Hospital, Charleston, South Carolina. Service afloat, from 1951 to 1953, as Senior Dental Officer on board the tender Arcadia, preceded his assignment as Assistant Dental Officer at the Charleston (South Carolina) Naval Shipyard. In May 1957 he was ordered to duty at the Naval Station, San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he continued to serve until assigned in June 1960 to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Paris Island, South Carolina.
