Frederick Bernard Carlson

Frederick Bernard Carlson was born in Meadville, Pennsylvania, on May 10, 1907, son of Edward J. and Grace L. (Wheeler) Carlson. He received the degree of Bachelor of Science from the University of Detroit in 1933 and was awarded his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Kansas in 1935. On September 25, 1942 he was commissioned Lieutenant in the in the Medical Corps of the US Naval Reserve and subsequently advanced in rank to that of Captain, to date from July 7, 1955, having transferred to the Medical Corps of the Regular Navy on July 29, 1948.

Ordered into active naval service he had instruction at the School of Aviation Medicine at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida, from November 1942 until February 1943, after which he served as Assistant Medical Officer, Headquarters Squadron, Fleet Air Wing SIX. In January 1945 he reported as Medical Officer with Air Group EIGHTEEN and in June 1946 was detached for duty as Assistant Medical Officer at the Naval Air Station, Seattle, Washington. He remained there until September 1946 and on November 8, that year was released from active service. While on inactive duty he was attached to Marine Fighter Squadron Two Hundred Sixteen as Flight Surgeon.

After his transfer to the Medical Corps of the US Navy in 1948, he returned to active duty in August that year as Medical Officer with Fleet Aircraft Service Squadron One Hundred Twelve. In September 1949 he transferred to similar duty with Fleet Air Wing Four and from October 1950 to April 1954 had residency training in ophthalmology at the US Naval Hospital, San Diego, California. Following as assignment as Chief of Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Service at the US Naval Hospital, Newport Rhode Island, he reported in July 1958 for like duty at the US Naval Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee.

In September 1961 he became Assistant Senior Medical Officer/Ophthalmologist at the US Naval Support Activity, Naples, Italy, where he remained until July 1964. The next month he reported as Chief of Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Service and Assistant to the Officer in Command of the Naval Hospital in the USS Haven (AH-12). In October 1964 he was designated Officer in Command of that hospital.

Captain Carlson has the American Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; and the Nation Defense Service Medal.

On June 20, 1956 he was certified by the American Board of Opthalmology.

He died May 12, 1996.
