George William Bauer

4 May 1874-25 December 1950

George William Bauer was born on May 4, 1874 in San Francisco, California.  He was graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, California, College of Chemistry with the Class of 1897, receiving the degree of Bachelor of Science.

Commissioned Commander in the Naval Militia of California on April 16, 1901, he advanced to the rank of Captain on October 17, 1903.  Called to duty in the Federal Service on April 7, 1918, during World War I, he was commissioned Captain in the National Naval Volunteers to date from April 6, 1918.

He had World War I duty at the Naval Training Station, San Francisco, California, and in the Office of the Commandant, Twelfth Naval District, San Francisco.  He was relieved of active duty on September 19, 1919.  Continuing periods of training and active duty, he was commissioned Commodore in the US Naval Reserve to date from January 1, 1938.  He was transferred to the Honorary Retired List of the US Naval Reserve, effective June 1, 1939 in accordance with the Act of 1938, at the statutory age of 64 years.

Since his retirement in 1939 he has been President of Bauer-Schweitzer Hop and Malt Company and President of the Army-Navy Club of San Francisco.  He is a member of the American Chemical Society; the American Electro-Chemical Society; the Society of Chemical Industry, London, England; the American Society, Advancement of Science; and Master Brewers Association of America.
