Donald F. Carpenter

Donald F. Carpenter was sworn in as chairman of the Munitions Board September 22, 1948, to succeed Thomas J. Hargrave. Before his appointment by President Truman to this office, Mr. Carpenter had served as chairman of the Military Liaison Committee of the Atomic Energy Commission and Deputy to the Secretary of Defense in atomic energy matters.

During the war, Mr. Carpenter was Assistant Chairman of the Small Arms Ammunition Industry Integrating Committee for the War Department.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, September 24, 1889, and was educated at Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received a degree of Bachelor of Science in general engineering, after serving in the Coast Artillery Corps as a second lieutenant during World War I.

Mr. Carpenter is a director of the Merchants National Bank, Leominster, Massachusetts; trustee, Bridgeport-People’s Savings Bank; director, Seneca Falls Machine Co., Seneca Falls, New York; term member of the Corporation of MIT and Chairman, Visiting Committee on Student Activity, MIT; and trustee of the University of Bridgeport. He is a member of the American Management Association and various clubs. He has traveled widely in the United States and Europe.
