Subj: Abbreviations for phrases, sentences or group of sentences, for use in naval messages relating to transfer and assignment of naval personnel

1. Purpose. To provide commands authorized to issue orders a list of approved abbreviated equivalents for certain phrases, sentences, or groups of sentences employed therein, so that the length of messages relating to the transfer or assignment of naval personnel may be reduced.

2. Background. Reference (a) canceled JANAP 169 containing authorized abbreviations for use by the joint services, and authorizes the use of well-recognized abbreviations, and abbreviations and short titles which have, through years of joint usage, become self-evident, unequivocal, and universally known. As a result, enclosure (1), a revision of the heretofore canceled Bureau of Naval Personnel Condensation Code of JANAP 169, is promulgated for guidance and usage.

3. Action.

a. All commands preparing messages relating to the transfer or assignment of Navy personnel should utilize the abbreviations contained in enclosure (1) to the maximum extent possible, except when the need for clarity is an overriding consideration.

b. Normally, the function of transcribing messages into unabbreviated form should not be assigned to the communications office.
