Biographical Note

Lieutenant Addison Grant Noble served as a chaplain in the United States Naval Reserve during World War II. He graduated from the Chaplain's School in Williamsburg, Virginia on 28 July 1944 and attended APA School at the Frye Hotel in Seattle, Washington before being assigned to the crew of the USS Eastland (APA-163) in October 1944. He served aboard that ship until November 1945.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains the scrapbooks and other material collected by Lieutenant Addison Grant Noble, Chaplain USNR from July 1944 through November 1945. The bulk of this material covers Lieutenant Noble's service on USS Eastland (APA-163), October 1944 through November 1945, and contains papers (notes, correspondence, dispatches, official documents, issues of the ship's newspaper, etc.), photographs and various forms of ephemera relating to his service aboard that ship. The collection contains numerous newspaper clippings and articles relating to the ports called upon and/or the battles conducted nearby.

Detailed Description of the Collection

Scrapbook No. 1, July 1944 - September 1945 (Box 1)
This scrapbook contains photographs, documents, postcards and ephemera relating to his attendance at the Chaplain's School in Williamsburg, Virginia and his training at the APA School at the Frye Hotel in Seattle, Washington before being assigned to the crew of USS Eastland that was forming at Astoria, Oregon. Additional material covers the ship's commissioning and her various cruises to the Pacific during World War II.

The material in this scrapbook covers the ship's travels to Hahodate, Japan; Agana, Guam; and Tientsin, China in October 1945 and to Jimsen, Korea in November 1945.

Various pieces of correspondence to and from Lieutenant Noble during this time period including standard letters to the "Eastland Family."

Restrictions on Use

Manuscripts are unavailable for loan and must be consulted in the library. Photocopying of manuscripts is generally prohibited, though the use of digital cameras by researchers to reproduce non-copyrighted materials is permitted. Permission to photocopy a limited number of pages may be granted by the reference staff, contingent upon the physical state of items. All photocopying of materials shall be done by the reference staff, or under their close supervision. The use of personal scanners by non-library staff personnel must be approved by the reference staff on a document-by-document basis (Reference: Naval History and Heritage Command Instruction [NAVHISTCENTINST] 5070.1C.).
