Biographical Note

Edward Hooker was born at Farmington, Connecticut in 1822. He entered the merchant service in 1836 and entered the US Navy on 20 July 1861 when he was appointed acting master. He served on board Louisiana and Victoria before being transferred to the Potomac Flotilla where he commanded CurrituckYankee, and Commodore Read. He was wounded on 5 October 1861 while cutting out a privateer and was subsequently in the Burnside Expedition and all of its engagements. After the Civil War he served as the naval store keeper at New York and commanded Idaho. He retired with the rank of commander on 25 December 1884.

Scope and Contents

The bulk of the collection consists of four bound journals containing Lieutenant Hooker's official correspondence (letters and orders) while he was serving as a volunteer naval officer during the Civil War.

Letter Addressed to Mr. Wood, dated 14 July 1871.
Transmittal letter containing a copy of a letter from Lieutenant Murray to the Chief Clerk of the Navy Department regarding the conduct of Acting Lieutenant Hooker during the destruction of the Confederate schooner in Chincoteague Inlet, Virginia on 5 October 1861. The original letter was found in the ZB files. Includes an "Explanatory" note by Hooker and a poem titled "The New Torpedo Hooker, An Invaluable Recipe for Removing Obstructions to Gunboats Successfully Forever."

Copy of a letter sent to Admiral David D. Porter regarding the account given in his book of the fight at Washington, DC on 6 September 1821. Includes explaining note and copy of his appointment to acting volunteer lieutenant, dated 19 September 1862 with endorsements and orders.

Manuscripts are unavailable for loan and must be consulted in the library. Photocopying of manuscripts is generally prohibited, though the use of digital cameras by researchers to reproduce non-copyrighted materials is permitted. Permission to photocopy a limited number of pages may be granted by the reference staff, contingent upon the physical state of items. All photocopying of materials shall be done by the reference staff, or under their close supervision.
