Biographical Note

Edward Stanley Kellogg was born on 20 August 1870. He was appointed to the United States Naval Academy from New York State on 18 May 1888. He graduated with the Class of 1892 on 3 June 1892 and entered naval service as a Passed Naval Cadet. He was commissioned two years later as an assistant engineer in the Engineer Corps. He served briefly on the cruiser USS San Francisco before being assigned to USS Yorktown (Gunboat No. 1) on the Asiatic Station, reporting on 26 April 1895 (he may have served on or taken passage on the protected cruiser USS Baltimore at some time during this period). He served on USS Yorktown until the Spanish-American War when he was the assistant engineer for the screw steamer USS Hist.

Kellogg retired with the rank of captain in 1920. He died at the naval hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, on 1 August 1948.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of two scrapbooks and associated material collected by Kellogg during his travels to Europe and the Far East while serving in the Engineer Corps. The bulk of the material consists of photographs, many of which appear to be commercial reproductions, interspersed with invitations to weddings, tickets to enter sights, invitations, programs and other similar souvenirs. The photographs generally are of poor quality.

Arrangement

The scrapbooks are housed in two boxes: one is located in the collections of the Photographic Section, Naval History and Heritage Command. The other is located in the Historical Manuscript Collection, Navy Department Libary.

Detailed Description of the Collection

Scrapbook No. 1, 1895-1896
The first half of the book contains photographs that were taken in various cities in Europe and includes pictures of buildings, streets, monuments, statuary, paintings, etc. The second half contains photographs of Japan and of various Japanese naval vessels (see NHF-179 catalog card filed under Edward S. Kellogg for specific subjects).
The scrapbook contains various souvenirs and ephemera including the following items of special interest:
Program: "The Baltimore Minstrel Troupe of the US Flagship Baltimore Grand Entertainment of Decoration Day, May 30th, 1895."
Program: "HMS Centurion Officers Burlesque Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves", Nagasaki, 20 May 1896.
"Program of Athletic Games, USS Ship Yorktown, 4 July 1896."
Program and Menu: USS Baltimore, flagship of the Asiatic Station, Cheefoo, China, 29 September 1895.

Scrapbook No. 2, 1897-1898
The scrapbook contains one picture of USS Yorktown and what appears to be USS Concord. The bulk of the other photographs show various scenes of places of interest, locals, and daily life in China, India and the Middle East, including pictures of the Suez Canal. The scrapbook also contains a small collection of squadron bulletins issued by USS New York between 17 June and 27 July 1898.
Various souvenirs and ephemera including the following items of special interest are contained in the scrapbook:
"Program of Entertainment Given by Minstrel Troupe of U.S.S. Yorktown, Saturday February 27, 1897."
"Programmme of 108th Performance of Amateur dramatic Club of Shanghai, Saturday, 30th January 1897."
"The First Engine Room Watch," as described by Edward Kellogg.
A set of five extremely detailed, hand painted greeting cards in vibrant colors depicting elaborately dressed Chinese civilians containing humorous proverbs, in English, celebrating Christmas and the New Year.
Invitation: "To Celebrate the Birthday of Her Imperial Majesty, the Empress Dowager of China."
Pamphlet: "The Sailor's Stars" by Dr. Henry Emerson Wetherill.

Restrictions on Use

Manuscripts are unavailable for loan and must be consulted in the library. Photocopying of manuscripts is generally prohibited, though the use of digital cameras by researchers to reproduce non-copyrighted materials is permitted. Permission to photocopy a limited number of pages may be granted by the reference staff, contingent upon the physical state of items. All photocopying of materials shall be done by the reference staff, or under their close supervision. The use of personal scanners by non-library staff personnel must be approved by the reference staff on a document-by-document basis (Reference: Naval History and Heritage Command Instruction [NAVHISTCENTINST] 5070.1C.).
