Fought on the high seas of the Pacific more than half a century ago, 4-7 June 1942, this battle altered the course of WWII in the Pacific.
On 3 June 1949, Midshipman Wesley A. Brown became the first African-American to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy.
On 6 June 1918, during WWI at the Battle of Belleau Wood, Lt. j.g. Weedon E. Osborne was killed in action while attempting to rescue a wounded officer. For his "extraordinary heroism", he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
