Biography

Scope and Content Note

These papers document all phases of Admiral Chester Nimitz's career. They are especially important for the period 1947-1966, for Nimitz's service as Commander-in-Chief, US Pacific Fleet and Pacific Ocean Areas from 1941 to 1945, and as Chief of Naval Operations, 1945-1947. Official, semi-official, and personal correspondence, dispatches, publications, speeches, subject files and newspaper clippings are included.
