Biographical Note

Captain Ralph L. Lovejoy served as the commander of numerous supply convoys in the Caribbean, North Atlantic, and Mediterranean theaters during World War II. On 13 August 1942, his flagship, S.S. Delmundo, was torpedoed and sunk off Cape Maysi, Cuba. The British destroyer HMS Churchill rescued Captain Lovejoy and other survivors. Following the war, he was awarded a Bronze Star for his service and promoted to the rank of Captain while in retirement.


Scope and Content Note

The papers were donated by Captain Lovejoy's son, Willard B. Lovejoy, and span the duration of his naval career from 1919 to 1946. The collection includes official orders, personal logs, charts and logs pertaining to convoy duty in World War II, promotion and commendation documents, as well as photographs and assorted personal papers.
