Biographical Note

Logan C. Ramsey was born in Washington, D.C., on February 26, 1898.  He was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1914, and commissioned Ensign in June 1918.  After graduation in 1918, he was assigned to USS Texas, operating in the Sixth Battle Squadron of the Grand Fleet. When he detached from that duty in 1921, he reported to the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida, for flight instruction.   He became a naval aviator on December 21, 1921, and was thereafter attached to Aircraft Squadron, Atlantic Fleet, from January 1922 to January 1924.  His next duty was at Naval Air Station, Naval Operating Base, Hampton Roads, Virginia, serving in that assignment until September 1925.
 
He then went on to the Hydrographic Office, Navy Department, Washington, D.C., where he organized the Aerial Navigation Section. Then he attached to aviation units on USS Langley, USS Lexington, and USS Saratoga.  He was Senior Aviator on USS New York for two years, and in June 1934 he joined USS Chicago, having duty as Wing Commander, Heavy Cruisers, and in command of Scouting Squadron 10.
 
He attended the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, from 1935 to 1936. When detached, he reported to the Navy Department, Bureau of Aeronautics, and was in charge of Industrial War Plans, having additional duty simultaneously as a member of the working Committee, Aeronautical Board, and on the Commodity Committees of the Army and Navy Munitions Board.
 
In April 1941 he became the War Plans Officer on the staff of Commander Patrol Wing Two and served during the early engagements of the war in the Pacific until July 29, 1942. Then he reported to the Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corporation, Tacoma, Washington, for duty with conversion of USS Core and USS Block Island, aircraft carrier escorts. In October, 1942 he assumed command of Block Island, and was attached to the Atlantic Fleet for participation in the anti-submarine warfare.
 
In March 1944 he assumed duty as Chief of Staff and Aide to the Commander Fleet Air at Norfolk, Virginia. He took command of USS Lake Champlain on June 1, 1945. In August 1946, he was assigned as Commander, Naval Air Base, Fourth Naval District, Headquarters at Atlantic City, New Jersey. He retired on June 30, 1949, and died on September 9, 1972, at U.S. Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Scope and Content Note

These papers relate to the naval service of Rear Admiral Logan Carlisle Ramsey. They deal with Naval Air Station Midway Island during the Battle of Midway. The collection includes memos, reports, logs, intelligence reports, radio logs, and a war diary.
