Historical Note

The French Indochina War ranged from 1946 to 1954, with France acting as advisors to the U.S. after withdrawing from Southern Vietnam. U.S. Naval involvement commenced in 1957, when the U.S. launched Operation Passage to Freedom, launching USS Montague to evacaute non-communist refugees from North Vietnam.

Scope and Content Note
