Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of the personal papers of Captain Puleston.  It is divided into four series.

Series I contains Captain Puleston’s notes, comments, and opinions on various subjects; inter-office memoranda; newspaper clippings; press releases; articles and correspondence covering 1932 to 1945.

Series II contains the records and manuscript accumulated during the preparation of Captain Puleston’s book Mahan: The Life and Work of Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan, USN, published by New Haven: Yale University Press, 1939.  The records cover the period 1840-1939.

Series III contains incoming and outgoing official correspondence, diplomatic telegrams, memoranda, press releases, newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous items concerning Economic Warfare.  These documents were accumulated by Captain Puleston while he served as Special Adviser to the Secretaries of the Treasury and the Navy, and as Navy Liaison Officer on the Board of Economic Warfare during World War II.  The records cover 1941-1945.

Series IV consists of miscellaneous subject files covering 1940 and contain additional articles and manuscripts by Captain Puleston and others.
