Biographical Note

Calvin Theodore Durgin was born in Palmyra, New Jersey, on 7 January 1893. He attended public schools in Palmyra before being appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy from the Second Congressional District of New Jersey in 1912. Graduated and commissioned an Ensign on 3 June 1916, he was advanced progressively in grade to that of Rear Admiral, dating from February 1943. He served in the rank of Vice Admiral from 1 May 1949 to January 1951, and upon his transfer to the Retired List on 1 September 1951, he was promoted to that rank.

Scope and Content Note

These papers concern Admiral Calvin Durgin's career from World War II until his retirement in 1951. Included are materials on combat operations in the Atlantic and Pacific and two sets of speeches and testimony by Durgin and other admirals on post-war unification and inter-service matters. Admiral Durgin was a noted leader in naval aviation.
