Scope and Content Note

This collection relates to Vice Admiral Horacio Rivero's special knowledge of naval weapons systems, including nuclear weapons. Rivero served as Assistant to the Assistant Chief of Naval Operations (Special Weapons) from August 1945 to February 1946. From February 1946 to June 1947 he served as a technical assistant on the Staff of Commander Joint Task Force One for Operation Crossroads, and was on the Staff of Commander, Joint Task Force Seven during atomic weapons tests in Eniwetok in 1948.

By 1962, he was the commander of Amphibious Force, Atlantic Fleet and assisted in the readiness of those forces during the Cuban Missile Crisis. From October 1963 to July 1964 he was Director of Navy Program Planning, Office of Chief of Naval Operations, and from 1964 to 1968 he was Vice Chief of Naval Operations. In February 1968 he reported as Commander in Chief of the Allied Forces, Southern Europe, from which he retired in 1972.
