Biographical Note

Captain Jordine S. Von Wantoch was born in Weston, Pennsylvania, and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at the State University of New York at Albany and her Master of Arts degree at the University of Michigan. Upon completion of Officer Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island, she was commissioned an Ensign in August 1956 and was promoted to Captain in November 1978.

Captain Von Wantoch's first duty assignment was at Naval Air Station, Hutchinson, Kansas. She served at the Naval Communications Facility, London, England, from April 1958 to January 1960 prior to her assignment to the Naval Radio Station, Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Returning to the United States in January 1961, Captain Von Wantoch became Director of the Course Administration Department, Naval Correspondence Course Center, Scotia, New York, and, in May 1963, she was transferred to the Navy Technical Training Center, Memphis, Tennessee where she served as Director of Training for Women.

Captain Von Wantoch's next assignment was on the joint staff of the Commander in Chief Atlantic, as Assistant for Personnel Plans and Requirements for Commander in Chief, Atlantic Fleet; she was also a member of the Joint War Room Staff. In January 1969, Captain Von Wantoch became Director, Vietnamese Language School at the Naval Amphibious School, Coronado, California. She then assumed duties as Director, Personnel Management Schools, Service School Command, San Diego, California. Included under her directorship were the schools for Leadership and Management, Instructor Training, Drug and Alcohol Program, and Career Counseling.

Captain Von Wantoch served as Assistant Chief of Staff for training Management on the staff of Commander Training Command Pacific from April 1975 until assuming duties as Executive officer of the Naval Administration Command, Naval Training Center, San Diego.

In June 1979 she reported to Commander, Navy Recruiting Command, Arlington, Virginia, where she served as Director of Administration and Logistics. During this period the Navy Recruiting Command was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation.

Captain Von Wantoch's awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, and the National Defense Service Medal.

Captain Von Wantoch retired on 30 June 1986 after thirty years in the Navy.


Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of personal papers of Captain Jordine Von Wantoch. The collection includes a Change of Command program from Personnel Support Activity San Diego, a copy of the 1984 General Unrestricted Line Officers Study, and a 1982 photograph of Captain Von Wantoch. Also in the collection is correspondence, related chiefly to Captain Von Wantoch’s effort to remain in the Navy during her pregnancy and following the birth of her child.
