Biographical Note

Robert A. Hobbs was born on 21 March 1918 in Omaha, Nebraska. He met and married Louise Clarke, and they had five children (Susan, Jane Ann, Robert Nile, and James Benjamin). After enlisting in the U.S. Naval Reserves on 18 December 1941, he was appointed an Aviation Cadet, in the U.S. Naval Reserves on 19 March 1942. Commissioned an Ensign in August 1942, he served in World War II with Fighter Squadrons 3, 10, and 8 on the carrier USS Bunker Hill. Hobbs later served as Assistant Flight Officer and Staff Commander Fleet Air Seattle and subsequently Executive Officer for Fighting Squadrons 75, 895, and Fleet Air Support Squadron 891. He commanded the Advisory Board, Advisory Council, and Naval Reserve Readiness Command Seattle.

He attended the American College of Life Underwriters and the University of Washington, from which he received B.A. degree in 1971. He later worked as an insurance consultant for the Fidelity Mutual Life Insurance Company in Seattle, Washington.


Scope and Content Note

These papers relate to the naval service of Rear Admiral Robert Andrews Hobbs, USNR, who was active duty in the reserves during his career. These documents consist of biographical data, a history, and Xeroxed photos of Fighter Squadron-Eight.
