Biographical Note

Louis Dreller was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on 6 March 1897. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire in June 1918, and was simultaneously commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy for Engineering Duty Only. He received temporary promotion to Lieutenant (junior grade) during World War I, was commissioned in that rank as of July 1, 1920, and subsequently progressed through the grades to Rear Admiral to date from July 14, 1943. His transfer to the Retired List in that rank became effective 1 July 1951.


Scope and Content Note

These papers contain official and personal correspondence, related material, and publications for Admiral Dreller's service prior to 1951 as an engineering-duty-only officer. Papers from his official duties and private business activities following his retirement are also present. Admiral Dreller was a "plank owner" for both Lexington, commissioned 1927, and Ranger, commissioned in 1943. He had several tours with the Bureau of Engineering, was Force Engineering Officer with Scouting Force when the United States entered World War II, and served at the Philadelphia Navy Yard during much of the war. His post-war service was at Pearl Harbor with the Inspector General's Office and as Assistant Chief of Naval Material.
