Biographical Note

Ernest Allen was born in Greenville, South Carolina on 4 March 1907, the youngest of seven children. He attended Furman University, earning his Bachelor's degree Magna Cum Laude in 1928. In 1929 he received a Master's degree in English literature from Columbia University. 

He was employed by Central Hanover Bank and Trust Company in New York City from 1929 until until receiving his Navy Reserve commission in 1942. Qualified as an Air Combat Intelligence Officer, Allen progressed to the rank of Lieutenant Commander before being discharged on 6 December 1945.


Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of the papers of Lieutenant Commander Ernest Allen. It includes personal and official correspondence, a 1948 address by Colonel Robert McCormick discussing the wartime activities of USS Intrepid, photographs, and miscellaneous documents relating to Torpedo Squadron 18. The collection is organized in a single series, arranged alphabetically.
