Scope and Content Note

Rear Admiral John Fitzgerald was Commanding Officer of USS Grenadier (SS-210) during World War II. He was captured when Grenadier was sunk in April of 1943 and held as a prisoner of war at Penang. This collection contains a narrative account of Rear Admiral John Fitzgerald's service in World War II. Fitzgerald wrote this account in 1945 following his return to the United States. The collection also includes a transcript of the diary that he kept while a POW as well as the diary of fellow prisoner Thomas R. Courtney.
