Scope and Content Note

The papers relating to the naval service of Fred H. Speiss, sonar operator, during World War I. The collection consists of biographical data and a diary which he kept from 11 May 1917 through 23 February 1919. The 49 glass slides relating to his naval service on SC 331 in the Atlantic and Mediterranean during 1918 were transferred to the Center's Curator Branch, Photographic Section.
