Scope and Content Note

The Papers of Rear Admiral Mitchell D. Matthews are arranged in chronological order and cover most aspects of his career. They particularly relate to his World War II service, which included command of destroyers Blakeley and Butler. Blakeley was torpedoed in the Caribbean in 1942, and Butler took part in trans-Atlantic convoy operations and the invasions of Sicily and France. Later in the war, Matthews commanded Destroyer Division 34 and Mine Division 60, the latter of which operated in the Okinawa campaign. A group of photographs from this collection was transferred to the Photo Section.
