Dates: 1947-1956

Collection Number: AR/357 (Formerly COLL/125)

Finding aid (Word)

Scope and Content Note

Rear Admiral Malcolm Cagle and Captain Frank Manson used these historical materials in preparing their history of the U.S. Navy's participation in the Korean Conflict, The Sea War in Korea. The collection includes correspondence, source material on the Korean Conflict, a draft of the book, reports, printed material, photographs, and sound recordings. The correspondence series contains Cagle and Manson's outgoing and incoming correspondence relating to their queries and answers on various aspects of the Korean Conflict.

The source material includes naval messages on mines and minesweeping, dispatches, press releases, notes on interviews with participants of the Korean Conflict, brief historical narratives, and some correspondence in reply to questions raised by Cagle and Manson. A draft version of the Cagle and Manson manuscript with the working title The American Navy in the Korean War is also included.

A large part of the collection consists of photographs relating to the Korean Conflict. Subjects of the photographic documentation include Navy ships, naval gunfire support bombardment damage, United Nations blockading and escort force staff and flagships, U.S. flag officers and VIPs, U.S. Marine Corps forces, Navy forces ashore, posed carrier settings, Navy TACAIR operations/bomb damage/reconnaissance, Navy construction battalion personnel, Inchon landing, UN/Combined Forces, Navy underwater demolition team, U.S. Army forces, and Korean civilians. The final section contains Dictaphone tapes of interviews between Cagle or Manson and participants in the Korean Conflict. Unfortunately, the collection does not include transcripts of those tapes and the Archives does not have the equipment to listen to the original tapes.
