Scope and Content Note

The Diaries of Surgeon Eugene Potter Stone cover the years 1875-1915. In the diaries are copies of photographs that he took before and during his naval career, as well as correspondence between Stone and his wife. The diary begins with of personal journal entries for daily life prior to joining the US Navy. The diary includes his naval service as a surgeon aboard USS New Hampshire (BB-25), tempoary duty at the New York Hospital, aboard USS Pensacola (1859), USS Richmond (1860), USS Minnesota (BB-22), USS Wabash (1855), USS Indiana (BB-1), USS Bennington (PG-4), USS Mayflower (PY-1), and at Mare Island where he assumed duty on RS Independence. Stone was later stationed on USS Rhode Island (BB-17), a ship of the Great White Fleet. Stone includes not only his daily activites in the Navy, but also his personal reflections on his marriage and the death of his father.
