Sir,

Having been in the Navy of the United States for the past ten years, and an Actg. Ensign & Pilot for the past eight months, I most respectfully request permission to be examined for an appointment as an Acting Master & Pilot in the Navy of the United States.

I am twenty eight years of age and have had four years experience navigating the James Potomac and ther Triburraries [tributaries].
