SMITH THOMPSON, ex-Secretary of the Navy.

Born in Stanford, Dutchess County, N.Y., 17 January 1768. Died in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., 18 December 1843.

Graduated from Princeton in 1788, and studied law in Poughkeepsie under James Kent, famous jurist and legal commentator, supporting himself meanwhile by teaching school.

                Admitted to the bar in 1792.
                Elected to the state legislature in 1800.
                Associate justice of the supreme court of New York 1802 to 1814, and chief justice 1814 to 1818.
                Served as Secretary of the Navy from 1818 to 1823.
                Associate justice of the Supreme Court from 1823 until his death in 1843.
