Records relating to naval activities and affairs are found in a variety of record series held by the Massachusetts Archives. For the colonial wars and the Revolutionary War, information can be gleaned from legislative records and assorted military rolls and accounts. Additional rolls, accounts, and lists document naval activity and service for the Civil War. Holdings also include a series of five ship log books (1731-1826) which include the sloop of war Winthrop (1782-1783) and HMS Rainbow (1771-1774).

Various Admiralty and maritime cases from the 17th and 18th centuries may also be found among the judicial records on deposit at the Archives.
