The Emil Buehler Naval Aviation Library's Special Collections department holds manuscript collections including the personal papers of Admiral John S. Thach, Admiral Austin K. Doyle, Vice Admiral Robert Goldthwaite, Rear Admiral A.C. Read, and World War I-era naval aviators.

The centerpiece of the library's special holdings is the Blue Angels Collection. Donated by the famed flight demonstration squadron, these files document the team's history from their formation in 1946 to the present. Hundreds of rare photographs highlight the collection.

Other special collections include files relating to the history of airship operations and the Navy's famed weather reconnaissance squadron, the "Hurricane Hunters," the Robert L. Lawson Photograph Collection of some 350,000 images, World War II aviation training records, ship and squadron cruise books, and aircraft technical manuals.
