Letters, notes, autographs, portraits, and other materials collected by the Harwood Family over a period of two hundred-fifty years. Much of the early materials, including Revolutionary War era materials, are Navy and military service related. Later materials include letters from major political, financial, and literary figures. Correspondents include Herbert Hoover, Nelson A. Rockefeller, Ray Lyman Wilbur, Pearl S. Buck, and Carl Sandburg. Also included are engravings, photographs, and autographs of historical figures. Includes papers relating to Rear Admiral Andrew Allen Harwood.
Jones, John Paul
Documents collected by Frank Golder relating to John Paul Jones' career as Admiral in Russian Black Sea Fleet during the war against the Ottoman Empire. Includes copies (photostats and typed transcripts) of correspondence from Jones to Prince Grigori A. Potemkin, handwritten in French. Also notes, diary, and correspondence excerpts (copies, by hand/typed or photo) assembled by Golder. Includes correspondence between Golder and Russian repositories about materials on Jones and Jones' career in the Russian navy.
Kane, Elisha K.
Journal, photograph, silhouette, printed booklet, and annotated sketch. The journal is one kept by Kane during the Second Grinnell Expedition, the purpose of which was to search for Sir John Franklin. The journal dates from 4 June 1854 to 15 May 1855.
Wilbur, Curtis D.
Curtis Wilbur served as Secretary of the Navy from 1924-1929. The collection contains various printed speeches and addresses from the period beginning March 1924 through November 1927. In addition, it contains various newspaper articles and miscellaneous correspondence.
