The Smithsonian's Archives holds the official records of the Institution and personal papers of many former Secretaries, as well as the papers of several exploring expeditions led by the Navy or in which naval officers were closely involved. Included are papers of the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842, commanded by Lieutenant Charles Wilkes; the North Pacific Exploring Expedition, 1853-1856; and the Polaris Expedition, 1871-1873. Also included are papers of various naval officers and scientists whose work reflects the Navy's support and participation in scientific activities of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The Smithsonian Archives welcomes researchers, and no advance appointment is required. However, their holdings are stored in multiple locations and the Smithsonian Archives encourages prior consultation with the research staff, either by e-mail atosiaref@osia.si.edu or by telephone at (202) 357-1421.
