Vice Admiral William S. Sims, Commander, United States Naval Forces Operating in European Waters, to Captain Charles Nelson, Commander, Submarine Chaser Squadron, Corfu

AC 25849  32-5-1                                 19 July 1918.

FROM:     Force Commander.

TO  :     Commander, Submarine Chaser Squadron, Corfu.

SUBJECT:  Commendation.

     1.   The Force Commander notes with interest and pleasure the hard work and enthusiasm of the Submarine Chaser Squadron based on Corfu. He has particularly noted the attack on an enemy submarine on June 18 in approximately latitude 40.19 N. longitude 18.49 E. If any further information confirming this attack or a possible loss of the submarine in question is received, prompt information will be given you.

     2.   From the evidence at hand it should seem very possible that the submarine was actually destroyed.

     3.   The Force Commander particularly notes the work of Lieut. Commander Spafford, Ensign C.L.Leovy, Ensign Conroy and Ensign Bevery.1 It is fully realised, however, that every officer and man is doing his best to promote the efficiency of our sub-chaser squadron, and the Force Commander has no doubt that the enemy will soon come to have a wholesome respect for our vessels.

WM. S. SIMS.
