1536. Owing to large number of destroyers now under repairs propose recommending to Department to retain U. S. S. PATTERSON until one of damaged vessels is returned to duty, after which PATTERSON will be sent to United States. Will present condition of boilers permit of this delay.1  15224. 1536.

Footnote 1: Although the reply from Pringle’s staff has not been found, on 25 April, Sims sent a request to retain the destroyer Patterson to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. See: Sims to Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, 25 April 1918. There he noted that five destroyers were damaged or under emergency repair.
