Navy Department Library Half-hull Model #5
Unnamed steam yacht. "Designed by Rear Adm. T.O. Selfridge, U.S.N. for the Baltic Iron Works, Saint Petersburg, Russia." Designer's half hull model, April 1876, scale 1:36. Design and model by Thomas O. Selfridge, Sr. Navy Department Ship Model Catalog #1978.
Self-taught naval architect Rear Admiral Thomas O. Selfridge, Sr. prepared a number of design proposals for major warships for the American Navy, but none of them was accepted. This yacht design, designated "Yacht No. 2" by Selfridge, apparently was prepared on speculation. It demonstrates Selfridge's design "formula" in which the fore and aft underwater bodies of ships displaced the same amount of water. No record has been found that a yacht was built from this design.
The Office of the Curator of Ship Models, Naval Surface Warfare Center in Carderock, MD has a collection of fourteen Selfridge models, related manuscript drawings, and letters.
Models #3 and 8 are also Selfridge designs.
