USS Cumberland. Decorative half hull model, ca. 1910, scale unknown. Donated by F. Kent Loomis. Possibly associated with Admiral Oscar Walter Farenholt (1843 - 1920) and his son, Ammen Farenholt USMC (life dates unknown.) Department of the Navy Model Catalog Number 1932.

Launched in 1842, the frigate Cumberland saw service in the Mediterranean Squadron and in the Mexican War. At the outbreak of the Civil War she was towed from her berth at the Norfolk Navy Yard to avoid capture by Confederate forces. She served as a component of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron until rammed and sunk on March 8, 1862 by the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia.
