One Special Assignment Award Medal from Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. The planchet is bronze and circular in shape. At the center of the obverse is a caduceus crossed with a horizontal foul anchor. Around the edge of the face are the embossed words "U.S. Public Health Service". The reverse is stamped "Special Assignment Award." A small suspension ring attaches the medal to a tapered ribbon. The ribbon is edged by a blue stipe and a thick blue stripe in the center. Flanking the center blue stripe on both sides is a grouping of white and maroon stripes- white, maroon pinstripe, white, thick maroon, white, maroon pinstripe, white.   

The Special Assignment Medal of PHSCC is awarded to those who have been detailed through official orders to serve in a special program of a Federal or State Agency or other organization for at least thirty consecutive days in a qualifying assignment. Assignments that require thirty or more non-consecutive days may be considered on an individual basis.
