One Isolated Hardship Award Medal from the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. The planchet is bronze and circular in shape. At the center of the obverse is a caduceus crossed with a horizontal foul anchor. The edge of the face is embossed "US Public Health Service." The reverse is stamped "Isolated/ Hardship Award." A small suspension ring attaches the medal to a tapered ribbon. The ribbon is edged by a thin blue stripe on both sides and a thin blue stripe in the center. Flanking the center strips is a grouping of white and maroon stripes- white, wide maroon, white.  

The Public Health Service Isolated Hardship Award is presented to PHS officers stationed at remote posts for over 180 consecutive days. The post must be designated as isolated, remote, insular, or constituting hardship.
