6803. Your 4467.1 Army authorities are retaining additional vessels for coal carrying service in war zone, demands of this service continually increasing. Army authorities apply to Force Commander in each case for arming these vessels. Request authority to assign any guns removed from vessels in European Waters to any vessels operating continuously in war zone which are in the service of United States Government. It is anticipated that all guns removed from 750 ton destroyers and those removed from coast guard cutters will be required for arming lake class and coal carriers. It is again urged that the recommendation in my 59572 be carried out. 06521 6803.
