USS El Paso (LKA-117) was laid down on 22 October 1968 at Newport News, Va., by Newport News Shipbuilding Corp.; launched on 17 May 1969; sponsored by Mrs. John Tower, wife of Senator John Tower of Texas; delivered on 20 December 1969; and commissioned on 17 January 1970.

USS El Paso (LKA-117) was deactivated and decommissioned on 21 April 1994. Stricken from then Naval Vessel Register on 31 August 2015, the ship lay awaiting final disposition in late June 2018.
