Vice Admiral William S. Sims, Commander, United States Naval Forces Operating in European Waters, to Lieutenant Commander Allan S. Farquhar, Commander, U.S.S. Sterett
My dear Farquar,
I have been reading with much interest the reports of your recent fine submarine hunts. They are certainly just the right stuff, and they deserve to succeed in giving you a couple of scalps. When the hydrophone appliances reach a further degree of perfection I have no doubt you will bring in some of these Huns.
I felt quite sure that my action in requesting your detail for this duty would be amply justified.
Very sincerely yours,
