After a successfull moon landing, the Apollo 11 Command Module splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on July 24, 1969. Task Force 130 took charge of the recovery operations. USS Hornet (CVS-12) and its embarked units were tasked with the job of recovering the astronauts and transporting them back to Pearl Harbor.
